Students say maths paper leaked half an hour before exam
Engineering students of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), who wrote their second semester mathematics backlog paper on Thursday, alleged that the question paper was leaked about half an hour prior to the examination.
Vice-Chancellor Karisiddappa, however, said it cannot be concluded that there was a leak, pending inquiry. He said the IT team was verifying the issue and looking through all their records.
The examination was scheduled at 9.30 a.m. and students alleged that the question paper was being circulated on social networking platforms about half an hour before that. A student, who appeared for the examination, said they compared the paper that was being circulated on WhatsApp with the one they received and found all the questions to be the same.
“We have sought a report from all affiliated colleges. Once the inquiry is complete, the university will decide on the next course of action,” Mr. Karisiddappa said. “We have sought CCTV camera footage at all levels that includes question paper downloading, packing, and distributing it to the students.” He said the university would issue a detailed statement on Monday.
VTU follows an online examination method where colleges have access to download the question papers half an hour before.
While the university has claimed that the online question paper delivery system was “foolproof”, experts and principals have urged the university to rethink how “secure” this system is. “With the current technology, issuing question papers to colleges even half an hour before the examination is dangerous as it can be circulated to students within seconds,” a principal of a city-based engineering college said.
